On January 15, 2025, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) announced it is revoking the authorization for the use of FD&C Red No. 3 in food and ingested drugs.
This decision stems from the Delaney Clause of the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. The revocation was prompted by a 2022 petition citing studies where high doses of Red No. 3 were administered to male rats through a mechanism not relevant to humans. At typical human exposure levels, the FDA notes no supported risk, but the law requires action regardless. [FDA to Revoke Authorization for the Use of Red#3]

This change aligns with growing consumer demand for cleaner ingredient labels and reflects broader scrutiny of synthetic food dyes. In sprinkle applications, the loss of Red No. 3 particularly affects bright pinks and purples in standard rainbow 8 blends, as these vibrant shades have traditionally relied on it (or combinations including it) for that signature bold, eye-catching hue.
At American Sprinkle Co., we’ve long prioritized high-quality, better-for-you ingredients—so you won’t need to worry about reformulations or label changes. Though we've been making natural alternatives for decades, our recently branded, Nature’s Palate™ line features 100% naturally colored sprinkles, nonpareils, quins, and mixes made with plant-based colors and no artificial dyes, including no Red #3.
We also have cost-saving, hybrid blends that are also Red#3 Free.
Whether you’re decorating cakes, cookies, ice cream, or creating festive treats, our vibrant reds, pinks, and every other shade come from nature while delivering the same joyful flavor and visual pop you love.
